Creative Ideas
I’ve drawn inspiration from courses, exhibitions, books, and online platforms — and often, the material itself “shaped the outcome” as I began to form it.

Shopping baskets
You can never have too many shopping baskets! It’s always good to have one at hand. The shape, the size of the inside, and the way the handle sits — all these details matter, depending on what you want to carry. Are you off to do the shopping or heading out on a picnic, with snacks and drinks for the road? Or perhaps you need something that fits your laptop and notebook for a busy day on the go? And of course, the look matters too — traditional or modern? Do you want a fabric lining, or should the beautifully woven edge remain on show?
My personal favourite is a design that reminds me of medieval castle kitchens — narrower at the base, gently opening at the top, made with two shades of willow.

In the kitchen
How to store vegetables and fruits if we don't want them to go moldy and we’re not fans of plastic containers? A basket provides proper ventilation, is made from natural materials, and is aesthetically pleasing.
Similarly, bread, other foods, or kitchen utensils can also be stored in appropriately shaped and sized baskets made of wicker.

Round baskets
In wicker weaving, the most natural shape is the round bottom and the basket sides built upon it. However, despite having the same base, a wide variety of shapes can still emerge by varying the side walls, edging, and handles.

Oval baskets
The oval base is woven in different ways across various parts of the world. Its technique is more challenging than that of the round base. In some types of baskets, the weaving at the edge of the base is extended to create a more angular, rounded-rectangle shape, increasing the basket’s volume. In larger baskets (such as goose-carrying baskets), a thin wooden board is sometimes added to the centre of the base to provide extra support and strength.

Rectangular baskets and crates
The square shape doesn’t come naturally to wicker as a material. Right angles or sharp bends that turn fully back on themselves can easily break the material unless handled with great care and experience. Often, special tools (such as cross braces) are needed to keep the side walls straight. It’s easier if we work onto a wooden base. Despite these challenges, this technique still allows us to create unique and special pieces.

Flower baskets
One of my absolute favorites is this exciting and beautiful basket shape. It’s perfect for transporting cut flowers, gathering herbs, and in a larger version, it can also be used to carry firewood into the fireplace. It makes a lovely decorative piece for both outdoor lounging areas and indoor spaces.

Little containers for collecting small treasures
Small storage baskets are always useful in every household, as there are always a few small items we want to keep in one place. These could be threads, office supplies, small decorations, toys, and so on.

Celebrations
Wicker decorations can create a special atmosphere, often brought out for specific festive occasions each year or crafted during the preparation period. A family tradition could include a Christmas tree made of woven wicker, decorated with fresh pine branches, or a unique star-shaped ornament. For Easter, pussy willow can serve as a lovely base for small door hangers, larger wreaths, or table decorations. In the summer, wicker planters and flower baskets can adorn the yard, while autumn offers an abundance of fruits and dried flowers, which can be secured to a wicker base for seasonal decorations.

Out in the garden
How wonderful it is when we harvest strawberries, raspberries, grapes, or even our herbs! The children can gather their little treasures, such as rose petals, pebbles, or autumn fruits, in small baskets.
